New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
