Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
